Watership Down by Richard Adams is pretty phenomenal. I'm reading Tailchaser's Song by Tad Williams now and it's very similar but in a good way. I guess I'm still just a huge fan of talking animals, but both of these books have such effort put into them, into the folklore and characters. It's inspiring.

No wait don't! Don't get cap started on Harry potter. Please I beg you. It will only end in tears (or possibly lols).
As for the best fiction I've ever read? Ever? I'd say "Sphere" by Michael Chrichton. Recently? "The Dresden Files" by Jim Butcher. Think Harry Potter for grown ups, and without all that ridiculous stuff that makes HP unreadable.
Sphere us just mind blowing. Lots of curveballs, an ending I didn't see coming, and it's unpredictable the whole way. They even throw in a point where you're not entirely sure whether or not the narorator is even a reliable one.

Critchton is awesome. If you didn't already, read "The Andromeda Strain" and "Prey".

For everyone: Robert Jordan (real name Oliver Rigney Jr. though he's dead now so it doesnt matter) - The Wheel of Time.
There is nothing better. Really. Makes Lord of the Rings seem like a quick shallow bedtime story.
For the younger audience: His Dark Materials. It was just very well written. Adrenaline rush.
For the older audience: Thomas Covenant the Unbeliever. Will leave you depressed, hollowed-out yet begging for more.

I've read the andromeda strain, but I found prey a bit difficult to follow. That's on my list of books I need to reread.

Besides the Animorphs series, Warchild by Karin Lowachee is my favorite fictional book of all time. It has fantastic characters and character development, space pirates, aliens, and all sorts of awesome. Even if sci fi doesn't normally float your boat (though I assume it is, considering the forum we're in), it's a great read for people who like well-developed characters and thoughtful literature.

I also like Kim Stanley Robinson's Mars saga (Red Mars, Green Mars, Blue Mars). KSR rocks!
