The Host

Post by rabnak » Tue Apr 07, 2009 2:36 am

Now, I'm no fan of Twilight. I read all the books, I saw the movie, but I'm not really a fan. I simply... tolerate it.
But there was another book Stephanie Meyer wrote, The Host.

The Host was about, simply, aliens. Unlike the vampires in Twilight, they actually did stuff. These aliens were called Souls, and were beautiful, snake-like creatures that supposedly looked something like this:

(art is not mine, picture found here)

Souls had to have a host body to live, and were inserted through the back of the neck into the brain. They were incredibly peaceful creatures, and did not condone violence in any way, and actually bettered the worlds they infested. In the book, they had taken over Earth. When they take over a host body, the "owner" of the body is completely erased, leaving only the Soul to control it.

The book centers around a Soul who had a new, human host named Melanie. The one problem was, Melanie had not been erased. She was still there.

Who else has read this book?

This sound a heap like a TV show that was on a while ago called The Invasion.

And you never put the safety on
And you all have plans,
To take it

Yeah, I didn't post much about the plot, though, did I? xD

I just finished reading the twilight series and would love to get into the host. It was actually looking into this book that renewed my interest in the Animorphs series.

Any opinions on it?

In my opinion, The Host was MUCH better then the Twilight series. The plot was better, it was more well-written, and the aliens weren't just there to be aliens.

I think it's definitely worth the read.

I hate the Twilight series, but I actually own The Host. I only read half way through it before I got really busy with college and such, but it's actually a very interesting story from what I've read so far. I plan on going back and finishing it this summer.

*waves at Rabnok* It's Melanie's player from SC :)

Anyway I so want a copy of this one. I enjoyed it.

Did you know some fans thought it was a rip off of Visser? lol

You mean it's actually readable? Okay, I'll trust you on this and go find a copy at some library one day.

And it really sounds a lot like Animorphs. No offense, but seriously.
This fight is personal.

I saw the translated version and read the back cover text. The plot is almost a polar opposite to Animorphs. However, I didn't buy it, because it was outrageously priced AND translated to Finnish.

I'm biased, because I hate the Twilight books with a passion, but I didn't like it much. I read it too long ago to give it a proper review, but the ending annoyed me. Just too happily-ever-after for my taste.
