<One of the things I noticed about this book is that it talks about the horror of war, however unlike The Experiment, this book talks TO the reader instead of AT the reader.>
For those of you who have already read the Andalite Chronicles the prologue goes over Aristh Elfangor hiding the Time Matrix, and that this is why Elfangor landed in the abandoned construction site in book #1, he was looking for it, he was going to try to rewrite history.
Chapter one starts off like most Tobias books, he is telling us about how weird it is to be half-Human, half-bird with an Andalite father and then he mentions his girlfriend…Melissa Chapman?!?
We have jumped the track and are in an alternet timeline. Tobias tells us that in this timeline humans haven’t discovered DNA yet and even the slaves seem to be enjoying the beautiful day.
Yes, that’s right folks, in this world slavery is still popular in the part of the world where the Animorphs live. More than that Cassie, an African-American girl, who in our timeline would have been a slave herself if she was born between the 1780s and the end of the civil war, has a slave of her own in this new time line. This slave girl is a slave partially due to being mostly deaf and if that makes it better or worse than being a slave due to your religion, the color of your skin or the shape of your eyes is a topic for another time.
Cassie signals to her slave to leave. The girl’s name is September twelve, possible her birthday. Could you imagine just being known by your birthday?
Anyway the girl is said to be reasonably smart and capable of telling tails, lets hope she doesn’t tell the Yeerks that she has to leave every time that bird shows up.
We also learn that in this new timeline Marco has both his parents, they even just got the newest video game…pong.
Also Jake is a little raceist against Ax. The Animorphs still know the Chee and Eric has reported that the Yeerks are setting up a front organization to recruit troops sent to fight in the war…with Brazil?!? Fighting over “land that we need”.
Cassie doesn’t seem to care “if we wipe out a bunch of primitives.”
The EMPIRE rewards troops that survive the war, most of the troops that they send out, who now have Yeerks in their heads.
Jake wonders if Cassie is a subversive, something Marco seems to have talked to him about previously. Should we eliminate Cassie?
Marco voices that the thought of living in the same world as these “Jungle rats and slugs” is offensive to him.
Then the Drode appears, he loves the new time line. Marco morphs into his favorite battle morph…a grizzly bear?!?
Then the Drode sets everything, or at least the Animorphs, back to how we remember them. Melissa is gone and Rachel is back, she had been in some kind of reeducation camp for being a violence-prone sociopath.
There are few books in this new time line, only two radio stations, one television station, all of it censored, technology is 50 years behind what is should be, anyone with an IQ below 80 or with a defect of any kind is a slave, poverty is widespread, even though the poor and homeless are rounded up and shot while some woman are forced to breed to repopulate the dominant white race.
All of this because Visser 4 is in the host body of an actor named John Berryman, he lost the battle for Leera due to the events in book #18, and found the Time Matrix.
There is a deal, the Animorphs can follow V4 and try to fix history, however one of them must die.
The Animorphs talk about their choices; they can sacrifice one of their own, and by one of their own we most likely mean Jake, or live in the world they saw, a world where the Yeerks are only a few months away from ending the war in Brazil their way, a world where there aren’t 50 channels, so something good must be on, there is only one government controlled channel.
Suddenly Rachel finds herself in the dark, in the rain and face-to-face with a large man on a large horse both wearing steel armor, with Cassie right beside her.
He is a French knight and Cassie only had half a year of French lesions; she got a B minus on her last test, so about 80 to 85%.
The French knight thinks that Rachel and Cassie are English spies. Another French knight shows up.
Rachel decides to try to freak out the French knights with her elephant morph and a fight breaks out, Cassie and a half morphed Rachel fight two French knights.
Jake does his best to straighten things out. It is 1415 and the forces of Roi de France, lead by Charles VI are at war with Henry the 5th of England who wants the French thrown and none of the Animorphs know who should win this one.
Jake asks Ax what a Time Matrix looks like and Ax says that he doesn’t know. Jake reminds everyone that they could mess up history just as easly as Visser 4. Jake declares the Time Matrix the most dangerous weapon ever created and gives the order to end this guy. “His personal history ends here.”
The Animorphs look at the two armies for three hours before realizing that Visser 4’s host body is the only one that will look like it has ever touched soap and toothpaste. Then they spot Visser 4 with the English archers. Keeping in mind that if you had three hours to do what Visser 4 is about to do there are lots of other ways to do it that would be harder to stop.
With all of the Animorphs in bird of prey morphs the archers all fire…
If you’ve never played Magic the Gathering, there is a card called “Wall of Arrows” it almost takes out the Animorphs, it does take out lots of men and horses.
Marco is down, Rachel tries to save him, almost getting hit by arrows herself. Then Cassie in horse morph saves them both. To be clear this means that as soon as Marco fell Cassie went into the woods, morphed from bird to human to horse and then ran towards the battle. Rachel and Marco grab Cassie’s horse legs with their bird talons, Cassie is stabbed with a spear and Rachel is stepped on.
Question; it was Cassie and Marco who seemed to understand that Crayak wanted Jake to die as payment, yet Rachel ends this chapter thinking that it would be her and not Jake who would die, when did Rachel realize that Jake was the target?
Jake and Tobias argue about how to rescue the others while Ax realizes that Visser 4 is about to be shot with an arrow.
Tobias plucks the arrow out of the sky and Visser 4 realizes that someone followed him back in time.
Cassie in horse morph, stabbed with a spear, using her body to shield Rachel and Marco in damaged bird of prey morphs, swords, maces, and axes all being used to kill people all around them, in the battle of Agincourt. Then a Hork-Bajir riding a warhorse, actually Tobias riding Jake came in to save Cassie, Rachel and Marco, and scaring everyone else nearby.
Meanwhile Ax chases Visser 4 in his harrier bird morph. Ax even bluffs, something we have been told that Andalites never do. Visser 4 runs into a church where he has hidden the Time Matrix.
Ax is attacked by angry villagers as he trys to dimorph. Tobias and Jake ride to the rescue once again. Tobias still in Hork-Bajir morph steals a pitchfork and goes into the church with Ax.
“We were in a church. I was a seven-foot-tall creature with horns and a spiked tail holding a pitchfork. And I was in a church.”
Ax and Tobias find Visser 4 in the bell tower, Tobias sees the Time Matrix and Visser 4 does hie He-Man impersonation.
“I have the power now! I have the POWER!”
Jake still in horse morph appears near the muddy bank of a river, it is a cold dark night, it is also cloudy enough to hide the moon and stars. There are ice floats on the river. The people spoke English, not French. There is talk of Hessians and how the whole troop of them could be in the trees. Some soldiers have already crossed the river, also there is a general nearby somewhere.
The word ‘Hessians” sounds familiar to Jake, yet he can’t quite place it.
One of the soldiers menchens that his sister is in a place called Trenton where the Hessians fight like tigers. Now Jake, he fights like a tiger, just not right now.
Jake sees the general, and hears men whisper the name “Washington” as in General George Washington, soon to be the first President of the USA.
<By the way, it is the 4th of July 002014 as I write this.>
Marco and Rachel show up and figure out that this must be the day General George Washington crossed the Delaware River, making this the night of December 25, 1776. It’s Christmas night and Washington is freezing his boots off. Marco stole them. Apparently it rained that night.
Jake figures out that Visser 4 is most likely here to kill Washington so that a state never gets named after him.
Rachel sees Cassie pop in, human form, not injured horse. The two communicate and Cassie goes for dolphin. Then Tobias and Ax appear, Ax sees soldiers on the other side and Tobias dimorphs. The Animorphs reassure Ax that so far everything is as it should be, yet something clearly bothers Ax about all this.
Marco and Jake get in a boat, they are cold, wet and freezing.
Suddenly the enemy soldiers open fire. George Washington was suppose to get the drop on these guys the next day in Trenton, however Visser 4 must have warned them when and where the enemy would be.
One soldier lost a head, an oar was blown in half, Jake got another hole in his head.
The soldiers Ax had seen were the Hessians getting ready to attack. Now they fired another attack. Rachel orders the remaining Animorphs to attack the Hessians.
Ax attacked fully aware that we are now in a changed timeline, people live that should have died and people are dying who should have lived.
<What kind of children’s book IS THIS?!?>
“Bodies sank. Bodies floated.
Bodies rushed by, caught up in the current staring eyes goggled, dead.
Blood. Everywhere.”
<This sure isn’t Dr. Suess. Wait, was this ghostwritten by Steven King of Anne Rice?>
<What? This one wasn’t ghost written? Are you sure this is a young adults book?>
Cassie finds Jake’s body and tries to push it to shore when suddenly a time jump sends her into water with warm sunlight. The sun is shining, the air is clean, the weather is nice. Jake is still dead.
Tobias is one second from seeing Ax behead a Hessian officer from the end of chapter 21 when he is transported to the middle of the ocean with towering three-massed wooden ships, with vast white sails billowing. Tobias sees Cassie in dolphin morph and calls out to her, however she is so emotional about Jake’s death that she doesn’t respond so Tobais thinks that he is the only one to arrive so far.
Tobias sees on a map that they are in the Atlantic Ocean near somewhere called Trafalgar. Then he morphs human and goes hunting for the Yeerk who killed Jake.
Ax and Marco find themselves inside one of the ships.
I’d told Cassie we could protect him. I’d agreed: Crayak wouldn’t have him. But it had happened so fast. One minute, nothing. The next minute, death everywhere. No arguing, no heroic actions, no nothing. It had taken a millisecond.
And now…what could I do for him now? Nothing. No one could help him. His parents…he would never come home. What could I tell them? What could anyone tell them?
Ax uses his tail to cut away a wall of ropes.
<This is quicker I am very tired of being too late,> Ax said.
“Got that right man.”
Visser 4 speads a gunpowder trail all over the ship so he can blow it up. Marco morphs gorilla and chases after Visser 4.
Rachel had been in owl morph when Jake had been shot, she had decided to land, dimorph and then morph to grizzly, however just when she was fully human she had appeared on this sailing ship, a human female, young, blonde, and not wearing much in the way of clothing…right in front of a sailor who decided to report this to his lieutenant. The lieutenant was maybe 25, the other sailor about 13. As these two and 20 or so other sailors admire Rachel as the best looking stowaway the lieutenant says something about fighting Frenchmen.
<Keep in mind that the battle of Trafalgar was fought on October 21st, 1805, and given the time period the only time you would have seen this much of a female’s body is if she was in her underwear.>
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1795%E2%80 ... rn_fashion
Rachel notices a gorilla chasing a man and runs after to help Marco. Tobias flys into Visser 4’s face and puts some talon to the guy.
Visser 4 climbs rope and Rachel uses her chimpanzee morph from book 28 before the morph has even finished she starts to climb.
Visser 4 begs for his life and Rachel is blown in half.
Tobias chases Visser 4 down below deck. Ax joins the chase and standing next to the Time Matrix is Visser 4 pointing a flintlock pistol at the gunpowder trail, he fires. The Time Matrix takes Visser 4 away.
Just before the gunpowder bomb exploded Tobias disappeared to the next location.
In a timeline where Washington was killed crossing the Delaware river and the ship they were on blew up Tobias finds himself at a college campus with an almost all Caucasian male student body, the boys had short hair, crew cuts. They were a few females, however they too were all Caucasian.
Tobias stole some clothes and morphed human. One of the text books came out in 1932, it is a history book. Tobias reads that the Revolutionary war was now just a small failed uprising and the British Navy had been defeated by a fleet of French and Spanish ships when Admiral Lord Nelson’s ship Victory exploded.
In this timeline Princeton University flays the flag of the British Union Jack, just then a dolphin appeared.
Cassie thinks about the utter stupidity of war and the waste of life. She dimorphs next to Tobias.
“Why, it’s a colored girl!” one of three nineteen to twenty year old students said.
At the opening of chapter 29 Cassie has just been insulted with a word that means ‘black’ that is no longer used in polite company. Cassie decides to turn white for Mr. Davis. Polar Bear white. Tobias just stands there and watches.
Marco shows up just as Cassie decides to teach Mr. Davis some manners. Then Rachel appeared alive and unharmed. Everyone is supprised to see that Rachel isn’t dead, even Ax who shows up next.
Everyone that is exept Jake, who is still dead.
Mr. Davis tells them that it is 1934. They figure out that Visser 4 is at Princeton University in 1934 looking for Albert Einstein the German Physicist, however he isn’t here. In our time line the Jews were persecuted and he left Germany. Einstein is Jewish by blood and German by country, kind of like how Cassie is African-American, Albert is Jewish-German. However in this new timeline he never fled Germany for America.
The Animorphs figure out that they probably can’t die because Ellimist insisted that the price be only one life, and that they need to use the Time Matrix themselves to fix history. Then they start jumping through history like crazy as Visser 4 tries to lose them.
Finally Marco finds himself in the English Channel about to land in Normandy, France on D-Day during WWII.
“Oh, no.”
Not having a morph strong enough for this, Marco decides to morph fly in the hopes he will be too small for the bullets to find him.
Ax decided that humans are mad, lunatics, evil, violent, destructive, hate-filled creatures. He left out, greedy, selfish, illogical, savage child race.
Ax, Tobias, and Cassie go to their verius bird of prey forms, when a soldier lands on Ax, he is soon buried under two dead soldiers one of them a medic. Then Cassie spots Visser 4.
Visser 4 had warned German troops that this was the time and place to destroy their enemy’s forces once and for all. Cassie and Tobias choose a place to change into more appropriate forms for this conflict; a wolf and a Hork-Bajir.
However moments after they attack they see that the insignia on the tanks is all wrong and Visser 4 is in handcuffs!
Ax, Marco and Rachel see Tobias and Cassie attack.
Page 169 said: I wondered how it had come to Earth. And I wondered how my brother, Elfangor, had known it was on Earth. Because surely he had known. Visser Four was right: Elfangor had chosen the spot deliberately. It was no coincidence that he had landed, had died, within a few feet of this machine.
<Hold up! I read the Andalite Chronicles, so I know that Elfangor hid the Time Matrix and that the reason he went to that abandoned construction site was to get his hands on the Time Matrix, yet how did Ax know this?>
<Turn back with me to page 11 and re-read to page 27, those are the pages with the Drode, pay close attention to page 16, they are told that:
The Time Matrix exists
It was found by a lowly human-controller named John Berryman, a not very successful actor.
The Yeerk inside Mr. Berryman’s head use to be Visser 4 until he lost the battle for Leera.
This Yeerk has used the Time Matrix to change historical events in order “to bring about a Yeerk victory and give himself greater power.”
That Crayak, not Ellimist, wants the Animorphs to put the timeline back the way it was.
They will be allowed to follow Visser 4 and their own selves will be protected from changes to the time line.
The price of all this will be one of their lives.
That they have two minutes to decide.
They ARE NOT TOLD:
That Crayak wants Jake dead the most.
That only one of them will die and when that one dies the others will become kill proof.
Where or how the Time Matrix was found or who put it there.>
Anyway getting back to chapter 35. Ax is educated on what happened during WWII, or at least how it went down in our timeline. Ax says it is not possible to conceive of a greater evil than the deliberate killing of a child. I wonder if enslaving children might be worse.
Tobias and Cassie descover that they really can’t be killed at least not until the end of this book.
French and German soldiers allied together tey again to kill Cassie and see that they are immortal. The symbol of this army is also all wrong. (See page 175 for description)
Visser 4 wants to know how they followed him and why they don’t die.
Then they talk to the captain, who wants to know how a monster and a talking wolf came to be here, then they notice Hitler.
Rachel, Marco and Ax talk about how to stop a whole bunch of tanks from getting to the beach. They decide that Rachel will grab a hand grenade and drop it inside the lead tank at the narrowest point in the road, after they pull the pin without thumbs of corse.
Tobias moved like lightning aimed for Adolf Hitler wanting to do to him everything anyone has ever dreamed of to hurt one of the most evil men in history, however Cassie tries to save Hitler’s life by pointing out that in this timeline he is only a driver.
Let me say that again, Cassie tries to save Adolf Hitler’s life.
Granted this Adolf Hitler isn’t the same as the one from our timeline so you make the call.
Tobias kills Hitler anyway, earning cool points for that.

<Just a reminder, in MM4 we learn that Cassie is sub-temporaly grounded, so she would put history right anyway.>

This book was pretty hit-or-miss for me. I'm actually going to take a nap in a minute here, so I really don't have time to read through the summary at the moment, or the book for that matter, but from memory, this book was incredibly boring for the first half for me, and really only picked up around Jake's death. Even then, the pacing was kind of all over the place.
I might elaborate more later. For now, I'm gonna try to get some sleep.

So just shut your face and take a seat, 'cause after all, we're just talking meat. And music?

I think it might be. Also it would take less time to read a TM summery then to read the actual book. However only by a few minutes.
I'm only joking TM. Actually it would most likely take you the time to read 3 chapters as it would to read this summery.
However he did leave out the very end of the book, I guess he didn't want to spoil the ending for us.
Also did anyone else notice that Time Matrix and Tobias_Marco are both TM???

I overall enjoy all of the Mega Morphs books and this one is no exception.I think this is what an Animorphs/ Dr. Who crossover would look like. Although maybe a bit darker and bloodier than Dr. Who. It's ok, the darker parts make this book stand out to me. If a TV show or movie were presented with an alternate Hitler who was harmless, they would probably let him live since a lot of shows only have the hero kill when it is easily justified.

There are a few confusing parts where the descriptions are lacking some details and move too quickly. Like the part where Visser Four rapidly shifts time and Ax is saying that Visser Four must need…and then he never finishes that thought.

Thank you! I thought the same thing when I re-read it and was just about to go back and read that part again. Also if Ax knows where the Time Matrix is then it seems like they could have stopped Visser Four that way instead of erasing John. But I guess that would have been less exciting.

I'd prefer slightly shorter ones. Not so short that you really don't good idea of everything that happens (like the ones I copy/paste), but the ones that you do are a little on the long side.

I think just a few paragraphs of the main events of the book would be fine.

Like MM2, I found this book very boring. Elfangor's Secret had too much action and not enough... plot.
