A Notice to New Members

Post by capnnerefir » Sat Jan 07, 2017 1:01 pm

If you're a new member and you've read the rules, you know the drill. The posts of new members go into a moderation queue until 5 of them have been approved, at which point you can post normally. While this sometimes means that we reject the posts of new members for being off-topic lacking content, it's mostly to prevent spambots and advertisers from infiltrating the board. While spambots can circumvent the usual security, they can't fool the human eye. This process keeps the boards free of bots who are only here to advertise.

Ordinarily, this isn't too much work. Lately, however, bots have been very good at getting around our security measures. The fact that new member posts must be manually approved means that none of you will have to see them - their posts will not appear on the board because they all get reviewed and rejected. However, the influx of spambots getting past the usual security measures means that our moderation queue is now flooded with hundreds (512 as of this writing, and the number is increasing rapidly) of spam posts. All of these must be manually reviewed and deleted. We're happy to do it to keep this forum from being flooded with such garbage.

Under these circumstances, though, it is important for new members to know that we may be slow to approve their posts, since they're buried under hundreds of spam posts from advertising bots. It also means that legitimate posts might be inadvertently thrown out with the trash. So if it takes a long time for your posts to be approved, know that this is why. And if you get an email saying that your post has been rejected for "advertising another website or product" please PM me so I can be on the lookout for your name and take extra care not to toss out your posts next time.

It should go without saying, but we are working to enhance our security to prevent more bots from flooding the mod queue. In the mean time, we ask new members for their patience and understanding.

Returning members have no doubt noticed some significant changes to the board. We have completed an extensive upgrade that has greatly improved security. Hopefully it will render our spam problem a thing of the past and everything can proceed as normal. In the mean time, we are working to restore the site to its previous condition.
