They're described as "sinking into the crevices of the brain" so I always asumed they were capable of entering an almost liquid, very pliable state.

I can't believe I've never thought of that!
That's probably why it's never mentioned - most children don't understand ear anatomy enough to question it.

That said, a small rupture in the eardrum will heal within a few weeks.
Or maybe they just push right past it and accept the asymmetrical reduced hearing as normal.
