If Animorphs was set in modern times

Post by Nykesutre » Mon Dec 07, 2015 12:26 am

What would happen if the Animorphs books series was set in modern times? What changes would happen in society's technological progress (of 2015)? Would the Animorphs' goals change over time in regards to the advancement of social media being more prevalent? Would Ax use Wikipedia? Please discuss.

They'd have to really decide, quite quickly, if they actual want open war because it could very easily blow up that way, quite fast.

Cassie would care a lot about climate change and if aliens could prevent/reverse it.

Mass surveillance would likely expose them as human very early on. Or they'd have to extremely careful to avoid it.

And yes, Ax would be intrigued by the existence of Wikipedia.

Throughout, we see that Ax seems to find humans dumb for having invented internet rather than rely on books for info. But now with high speed internet and other advancements in telecommunication, I don't think it would be right for him to call us dumb again.

Books are an amazing human invention. They allow instant access to information simply by
turning pieces of paper. They are much faster to use than computers. Surprisingly, humans
invented books before computers. They do many things backward. - From the Earth Diary of

I believe everything would've happen way more quickly. Big thing is all the amount of information generated on a person these days. Sure you can spoof, trick, and hide fairly well, but you basically have to give everything up, technology wise that's connected at the bare minimum. It'd be much easier for Visser Three and his pawns to capture the "Andalite Bandits" with full access to the mass surveillance that goes on these days.

Yeah.......Cassie would be complaining about Climate Change or Global Warming and i'd be yelling at her, hopefully through Ax who would debunk everything given what he knows about coupled nonlinear chaotic systems and how they are very adaptive (i.e. don't spiral out of control and result in runaway warming). Yes there's been warming, it's been going on since the Little Ice Age. We're coming out of a glacial period and snow/ice is melting. Nothing we do will affect the system in such a profound way that will reverse or stop it from happening. End rant on that.

1 Kinda cool thing that might get exploited too much would be Ax using microcomputers (Raspberry Pi, Arduino) and he could use them for a lot of devious things against the Yeerks. :) Example, Ax build a Pi cluster, put it in an pretty far away and out of way place that's plugged into the internet and monitors and collects information on people's social media behaviors and sees if and when their behaviors change to identify if someone has possibly been taken over by a controller. Cool, but could be easily abused with the proliferation of technology these days.

This is a fascinating question. One of the reasons I love reading these books is because it conjures up memories from when I was younger. As time went on, you could look at all the technological strides that were made over the course of the years.

If these books were written during this time period, technology would be easier for them to use against the Yeerks. At the same time, technology could also help the Yeerks recruitment.

I agree with VisciousVisser. It would be boring. It would lose all the nostalgia and fun. And a whole lot of things would become obsolete.
1. No more arcade visiting by Jake and Marco.
2. No more depending on landline phones for communication. All of them are bound to have their cellphones. They might even create Whatsapp or
Facebook groups for discussion (in code language of course.)
3. Why go to the library when you have the internet for information.
4. No more Radioshack. They will have to go to some other electronics store for gadgets.
5. No walkmans or radios.

Animorphs use social media to spread word of Yeerks, using fake accounts to avoid detection. The Sharing can be found on Facebook et al.

Danger of morphing being broadcast on YouTube.

Yeerks get Facebook to purge anti-Yeerk accounts.
