They're dead because they died, and they're in the woods because they felt like going there, so they did. End of story.
That, or they camped in the woods of Chernobyl, got hungry and ate a radioactive blueberry, which poisoned one of them, who hiccuped and infected the rest with some terrible mutation of some innocent germ, who is now evil and kills them all. The cabin randomly appeared after they died, beause the Ellimist didn't want radioactive snow to fall on them, because something horrible would happen.
